“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is one of the most iconic wrestlers in WWE history, known for his larger-than-life personality and legendary matches. Although Austin retired from full-time in-ring competition in 2003, fans have often wondered which opponents he could have faced during his hiatus. In a recent interview with WESH 2 News, Austin revealed that Brock Lesnar was the wrestler he never got to face in the ring.
According to Austin, he was scheduled to face Lesnar at a television taping in Atlanta, but the match never came to fruition due to creative issues. Despite the missed opportunity, Austin expressed his respect for Lesnar’s career, including his successful transition to the MMA world and his longevity in pro wrestling.
“That guy is Brock Lesnar. Way back in the day, I was scheduled to wrestle him in Atlanta at a television taping. The match wasn’t great as far as creative goes, so it never happened. That’s the match that got away.
“I have so much respect for Brock and watching him go through the evolution of becoming one of the best pros out there. To go into the MMA world and become a world champion. He’s had a heck of a journey and no one has had a career like his and his longevity has been supreme. Brock Lesnar would be my answer.”
Austin’s decision not to work with Lesnar in the past has been a topic of discussion among fans. In a 2019 interview, Austin explained that he chose not to show up for an unadvertised tournament-style TV match with Lesnar because he wanted to build up the match for a larger audience and make money off of it.
Although Austin eventually returned to WWE after his hiatus, he never ended up working with Lesnar. Austin’s legacy as one of the biggest stars in wrestling history is secure, and fans continue to enjoy his contributions to the industry.
As the wrestling industry continues to evolve and change, fans will always look back on the moments and matches that defined its past. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar will undoubtedly be remembered as two of the greatest wrestlers of all time, and their missed opportunity to face each other only adds to their mystique and legend.
