Shawn Michaels is undoubtedly one of the best in-ring performers to have ever stepped foot inside a WWE ring. Shawn was touted as Mr. WrestleMania and he truly lived up to the moniker. That being said, it seems Vince McMahon was once told to get rid of Shawn Michaels.

As many fans know by now, Shawn Michaels back in the 90s was a completely different person compared to who he is currently. Michaels’ backstage antics and insufferable personality is well-documented by now. In the past, Vince McMahon claimed that Shawn Michaels owes his life to Triple H. Many people also wondered why Shawn Michaels was even employed by WWE during the 90s after his horrible backstage behavior.

While speaking on Writing with Russo, Vince Russo talked about Shawn Michaels’ behavior when the latter used to be insufferable. Russo admitted that he once told Vince McMahon to get rid of Shawn Michaels, but McMahon shot down that request.

“I had enough of Shawn that I literally turned to Vince McMahon and said, it was just the two of us, ‘Why don’t you just get rid of him?’ And Vince looked at me, and he said to me, ‘Vince, I’m going to tell you something my father taught me. When you want to get rid of somebody, when you want to fire somebody, you do it on your time.’ So, in other words, what Vince was saying to me was there was still money for me to make in Shawn Michaels, and when that time comes, I’ll know it’s here; he is gone. So, this, to me, was very, very similar.”

Shawn Michaels would eventually overcome his demons and turned a new leaf, becoming a born-again Christian and righting a lot of wrongs that he had made in the past. Shawn has credited Triple H for never abandoning him and helping him out throughout the years. Vince McMahon clearly knows how valuable Shawn Michaels was and many fans agree he did the right thing by not letting Michaels go.
