Chris Jericho is a master of comedy and has always shown off that side of him with effortless ease, especially in WWE. Le Champion has also been part of numerous memorable moments in AEW so far and that includes his musical number with MJF. Now it seems Jericho revealed the backstage chaos that ensued ahead of the segment.
Back in 2020, Chris Jericho and MJF were engaged in a storyline, where MJF was trying to win Jericho’s favor and become part of The Inner Circle. During that time, MJF and Chris Jericho took part in the Le Dinner Debonair segment.
The aforementioned segment featured Chris Jericho and The Salt Of The Earth singing together in a musical number, which was a direct callback to the old days of classical music. It even ended up being part of The New York Times’s ‘Best Performances Of 2020.’
While speaking on his Talk Is Jericho podcast, Chris Jericho talked about the Le Dinner Debonair segment. Le Champion went on to reveal the backstage chaos that ensued after their original idea for the segment did not work.
“He had the initial idea to do something like a fantasy sequence, like you saw in ‘Rocketman,’ the Elton John biopic,” Jericho said. “He wanted to do ‘Tiny Dancer,’ and I was like ‘It doesn’t really fit our vibe. We should do something that’s more of a partner song.'”
Jericho then Googled songs and finally found ”Me and My Shadow,” with Tony Khan giving it the greenlight. MJF and Chris Jericho were ready for it and everything was going on schedule at Jacksonville. However, with just some time left before Dynamite, things went wrong.
“About thirty minutes later, we get this call,” Jericho said. “‘You guys can’t use that version of the song, or the publisher will sue us.’ ‘Why?’ They had some kind of beef with the guy that played trumpet on that version of the song, and they forbade us to … ‘You can use the song, you just can’t use that version.'”
“This thing was cleared and ready to go literally fifteen minutes before it aired,” Jericho said. “And Tony at one point went ‘You guys are going to have to do it live.’ I’m like ‘We can’t do it live! There’s cheerleaders and dancers!’ So that was the nick of time, right to the wire, like a MacGuyver. What a moment of almost pure disaster.”
The segment was obviously a huge hit and it helped MJF join The Inner Circle. Of course, MJF would eventually betray the faction and form The Pinnacle, as the two groups battled it out for many months in 2021. Regardless, fans will always look back fondly on the segment.
