MJF worked hard to establish himself as one of the most controversial and talked about talents in a very long time. The Salt Of The Earth is truly proficient when it comes to cutting a promo as well. Many believed MJF was going to turn babyface a while ago, and it seems Tony Khan even strongly considered turning him babyface.
During the AEW All Out media scrum, Chris Jericho stated that he believes MJF would become one of the top babyfaces in AEW. Afterwards, MJF’s mannerisms seemed as if he was actually going to turn babyface as well.
Of course, that didn’t happen as MJF is a full-blown heel as the AEW World Champion. Some fans were actually disappointed by him never turning babyface as well, despite any hints that would point in that direction.
While speaking with Todd Martin for the LA Times, AEW President Tony Khan talked about MJF’s current character in the company. Khan revealed that he strongly considered turning MJF into a babyface, but he ultimately resisted the temptation.
“I listen to the fans. When the reactions were so massive, I had to at least think about [making MJF a good guy], but MJF is the world’s best young pro wrestler and one of the best pro wrestling heels of any age I’ve ever seen and I think his ability to antagonize the other wrestlers and the crowd is unparalleled. AEW is at its strongest when MJF is at his worst as a villain.”
MJF is currently feuding with Jungle Boy on AEW television. We will have to wait and see how AEW will end up booking their feud in the coming weeks. If anything, MJF is still AEW World Champion as a bona fide heel.
