One of the focal points of Cody Rhodes’ storyline with Roman Reigns is how his father, Dusty Rhodes, helped train the Tribal Chief, but he didn’t do the same for his own son. These comments have made the rivalry between Reigns and Rhodes more personal due to the element of truth involved.
While both Dusty and Cody worked for the same company for several years, they never had the opportunity of working together. This storyline is something real for Cody Rhodes, and it turns out Roman’s words hit a bit hard.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Cody Rhodes mentioned how he was jealous of NXT stars who got the opportunity to be under his father’s tutelage.
“I think the jealousy was probably more intense than I even want to admit. It started before he had even passed when NXT was down the street from my house in Winter Park near Orlando.”
“I wanted to be in Dusty’s communications classes as he called it, but it was a promo class. I wanted to know what he was sharing with them. We’d never had that interaction. When he was a writer for WWE and I was brought up on the road, he asked to be taken off the road and he went to Florida and started that job, so we were never really truly a coach and a player. It was an intense jealousy.”
Despite not being mentored by Dusty Rhodes, Cody proved himself on the independent circuit after his first stint with the company. After building his own brand, Cody Rhodes returned to the WWE at WrestleMania 38 and instantly became one of the company’s top stars.
The American Nightmare is now set to face Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39. However, it remains to be seen if he will be able to dethrone The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania. Stay tuned to Ringside News for live coverage of WrestleMania 39.
