WrestleMania 38 saw one of the most iconic in-ring returns last year when Stone Cold “Steve Austin” fought his first match in 19 years against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania Day 1. WWE fans were again surprised the next day when the “Rattlesnake” came out to confront Vince McMahon and eventually stunned him and his protégé Austin Theory. Apparently, Theory now claims that nobody sold a Stone Cold stunner better than him.
Stone Cold was the face of the Attitude Era and is still considered the biggest Box-Office attraction in the history of sports entertainment. Steve Austin’s iconic signature move the “stunner” is widely regarded as one of the best finishers moves to date.
WWE’s rising star Austin Theory recently bragged that he sold the Stone Cold Stunner at WrestleMania 38 last year better than anyone else in history on the most recent episode of the “Insight with Chris Van Vliet” podcast.
“I think it is the best. I don’t think it’s right up there, I think it’s right past it.”
Van Vliet added that performers like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Scott Hall had been at the receiving end of the most iconic “Stunners” and had contributed to making it one of the most well-known finishes in pro wrestling history. Yet, Theory is convinced that his high-flying sell was the best in the long history of the maneuver.
“I mean, we didn’t say they didn’t [sell the move well], but what are we going based off of, height here? You know, because your boy was a rocket ship.”
Austin Theory claimed that he occasionally got hit by a stunner while working on the independent scene and would “just jump as high as I could” to get a response from the audience. Theory and Steve Austin had a brief backstage encounter prior to WrestleMania 38, during which Theory learned that “Stone Cold” was supposed to stun him.
“I knew the entire time that that is how I was gonna do it,” Theory said about his sell. “And I didn’t tell anybody because I didn’t want anybody [to go], ‘No, don’t do that because that’ll make this look like this.’ It’s like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna take my moment and that’s gonna be it.”
The current United States Champion Theory might have sold the best stunner of all time, but fans around the world might eagerly wait for him to sell the best “Attitude Adjustment” of all time as he is scheduled to face the franchise player, the legendary John Cena at WrestleMania 39. While Stone Cold is also rumored to appear at the “Showcase of Immortals”.
Do you think Austin Theory took the best stunner in history? Is his claim right? Sound off in the comments!
