GUNTHER’s remarkable performance in NXT UK created history in the modern WWE era, as he held the NXT UK Title for a record-breaking 870 days, becoming the longest-reigning champion. He is now a regular feature on Friday Night Smackdown, and fans remain enamored with GUNTHER, eagerly anticipating his every appearance in the ring. In fact, now it seems he has crossed a huge milestone in WWE.
The Ring General won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in June 2022 and has since defended it seven times. His reign is already one is the best in the company’s history.
GUNTHER’s reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion has been nothing short of incredible, as he continues to surpass various milestones in his title run. His latest achievement saw him become the longest-reigning champion since the legendary Honky Tonk Man’s memorable reign.
According to Fightful, GUNTHER has now held the title for an impressive 281 days, surpassing the previous record of 280 days set by the late Mr. Perfect. The talented wrestler held the championship from November 1990 to August 1991.
GUNTHER’s latest feat also puts him at fourth place on the list of the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champions since Honky Tonk Man’s record-breaking reign. He began his championship reign by defeating Ricochet on June 10, 2022.
GUNTHER is now just four days away from reaching another remarkable milestone, as he will surpass Greg Valentine’s 285-day reign in 1984 and 1985. The second-longest reigning Intercontinental Champion is Randy Savage, who held the title for an incredible 414 days from February 1986 until WrestleMania 3 when he lost it to Ricky Steamboat.
Despite these impressive achievements, GUNTHER still has some way to go to match the Honky Tonk Man’s unbeatable record of the longest-running title reign at 454 days, which lasted from 1987 to 1988.
He is set to defend his Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39. We will have to wait and see if he will be able to retain the title at the show of shows.
