Shawn Michaels is undoubtedly one of the best in-ring performers to have ever stepped foot inside a WWE ring. He was touted as Mr. WrestleMania, and he truly lived up to the moniker. For the most part, he has remained retired from in-ring competition. That being said, many WWE Superstars asked him to come out of retirement.
Shawn Michaels’ last official wrestling match dates back to November 2018, where he made a special appearance at WWE Crown Jewel. In that event, Michaels teamed up with Triple H to face The Undertaker and Kane, in what was meant to be an exciting tag-team match. That match is one that most have chosen to forget.
Unfortunately, the bout was heavily criticized by fans and critics alike, with many citing poor performances and questionable booking decisions as the main reasons for the backlash. Even Michaels himself has publicly admitted that the match was not up to par with his previous work, and that it should not have happened in the first place.
It’s worth noting that Shawn Michaels announced his retirement after his second legendary match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26, where he had put on a spectacular performance that cemented his status as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Since then, many WWE stars have reportedly tried to convince Michaels to come out of retirement and perform again.
One such report, dating back to December, revealed that Kevin Owens had spoken to Michaels following his successful match with Steve Austin at WrestleMania 38. While speaking with Alex McCarthy, Shawn Michaels confirmed that the likes of Kevin Owens and others tried to get him out of retirement.
“I asked him who has tried the hardest to get him out of retirement… he said Kevin Owens made an attempt during his last appearances in NXT. Also named AJ Styles, Johnny Gargano, Adam Cole among others.”
Regardless, Michaels is retired now and is focused on making NXT a great brand, and many young Superstars of tomorrow benefit from his teaching every day.
