After taking a seven-year break, CM Punk, a significant figure in the world of professional wrestling, made a highly anticipated return to the industry in 2021. His debut in AEW was met with controversy, and he has continued to be a divisive figure due to his outspoken opinions and previous scandals, despite his popularity and achievements. While many consider Punk one of the best pro wrestlers on the planet, Eric Bischoff thinks otherwise. In fact, Bischoff thinks Punk is a very average talent.
In the post-AEW All Out media scrum, CM Punk faced criticism for making negative remarks about Colt Cabana, Hangman Page, and The Young Bucks, leading to a significant backlash and damage to his reputation within the company. The fallout from his comments has remained a subject of discussion.
On top of that, Punk has been absent from the wrestling scene due to a triceps injury that required surgery, and his suspension may have further contributed to his prolonged absence. However, he has been making progress towards recovery.
Eric Bischoff also previously blasted CM Punk for being bitter and brittle and made it clear he does not think Punk is worth keeping in AEW. Regardless, other people feel differently.
While speaking with the Going Broadway podcast, Eric Bischoff was asked to share his thoughts on CM Punk. Unsurprisingly, Bischoff did not mince words when it came to Punk. In the end, he ripped Punk for being a very average talent.
“I don’t have any respect for him. I gave him the benefit of the doubt because I never met the guy. When he came out and the first thing he did was go for the cheap heat … by burying Hulk Hogan. It’s like, ‘Wait a minute, dude. You never met Hulk Hogan; you’ve never worked with Hulk Hogan; you certainly don’t know Hulk Hogan; and you haven’t accomplished a fraction of a fraction of what Hulk Hogan has accomplished. So why are you burying him?’
When a talent has to go to the low-hanging, ‘cheap heat’ fruit right out of the shoot, that tells me he doesn’t really have anything. He exposed himself to me at that point. He exposed to me what he didn’t have.
That was the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard anybody say,” Bischoff said. “So between those two things, it indicated to me that this guy ain’t all he’s cracked up to be. I think he’s a really average talent.”
Eric Bischoff also can’t imagine how Tony Khan can’t fire CM Punk. CM Punk and The Elite have not mended fences while he remains on the shelf after suffering a triceps injury. It remains to be seen when Punk will return to the company.
