Vince McMahon made a lot of questionable booking decisions during his long run as head of WWE creative. McMahon also knows what he likes, and he also didn’t mind revisiting a gimmick idea if he wanted to brush it off for a new generation.

During a recent episode of Oh…You Didn’t Know, Road Dogg explained what happened with The Ascension. That team came from NXT and had a ton of momentum, but then they absolutely fell flat after their WWE main roster call-up.

It turns out that Vince McMahon saw something very specific in them. The Chairman of the Board saw The Ascension as a second-coming of the Road Warriors team, something that fans obviously did not.

“The booking was different. When they got up to the main roster, they weren’t booked that way and they weren’t booked that way because Vince had in his mind that they were the Road Warriors, and that they had to look more like them or either be copies of them.”

Konnor and Viktor’s run as a legit threat in the tag team division didn’t last long at all. They were panned by the WWE Universe after their main roster debut and a promo that buried so many great tag teams of the past. That obviously wasn’t the best way to go about things, but Vince McMahon couldn’t be swayed.

The Ascension are still a team, but they’re on the indies now. We’ll have to see if they ever make their way back to WWE, but that first run certainly didn’t turn out the way fans expected of the NXT standout team.
