Cody Rhodes won the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match and punched his ticket to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. That Undisputed WWE Universal Title match is full of drama and history, which gave the Tribal Chief ammo for a very personal shot on WWE RAW this week.

During WWE RAW this week, Roman Reigns said that Dusty Rhodes never talked about Cody Rhodes. This was an attempt to play some mind games with Cody, but it didn’t seem to work as the Tribal Chief intended.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about the current storyline with Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. He also shed some light onto the fact that Dusty Rhodes was actually a huge fan of his own son’s WWE run.
The idea that Dusty Rhodes wasn’t a fan of Cody or anything is the farthest thing from the truth, because when Dusty was working and Cody was on the main roster, if Cody lost a match on RAW on Monday, Dusty would be in a bad mood the entire week. If Cody won, then Dusty would be in a good mood the entire week. His mood was determined by how Cody was being booked that week. Dusty was so, so into Cody. I know Cody told me that he thought Dusty would be upset about him leaving WWE.”
Dave Meltzer also noted that Cody Rhodes has said that Dusty Rhodes always blamed him about rich guys who have money that open pro wrestling companies, which is why Cody “had trouble trusting” Tony Khan at first. Obviously, Dusty Rhodes had no say in Cody leaving WWE, but odds are he would have been delighted to see the American Nightmare’s return.
Dusty Rhodes influenced a generation of pro wrestlers, and his influence on the business will never go away. Not only is his legacy still alive through Cody Rhodes, but The American Dream also helped out many Superstars along the way who will always carry a torch for him.
Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes are likely going to do anything they can to get under each other’s skin. Obviously, taking a shot at Dusty Rhodes’ memory and how he saw his own son was a very big shot to take. That doesn’t mean Roman Reigns’ insult was grounded in reality.
