AEW and WWE are still operating in the same business, and contracts are always an important part of the game. As AEW contracts are running out, WWE is keeping a close eye on the situation.
Kenny Omega’s AEW contract should have been up by now, but Tony Khan tacked on more time due to Omega’s long injury hiatus. This might keep The Cleaner in AEW for longer, but he might not stay there forever.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that WWE is going to “go hard” after AEW talent. This could see several members of the AEW roster jump ship. On the other hand, AEW also has their eye on WWE talent, but the shift in momentum might not have done Tony Khan any favors.
A lot of key [AEW] deals are gonna be up this year, and WWE is gonna go hard at everyone good. Also, there’s gonna be a lot of WWE deals up and [Tony Khan] need to make the product, and the perception of the product, attractive enough where guys on the other side go, ‘they’re solid, they have an easier schedule, they’re financially stable, they’re doing good … but right now I don’t think the perception of WWE talent is to go there.
So, that’s the key thing is perception for WWE talent is like ‘hey, it’s a fresh coat of paint for me, and I’m in the middle.’ It’s gotta be the right guys for AEW.
WWE could find themselves with a few key members of the AEW roster if they can make certain deals work. They are obviously paying attention to current AEW contracts, because a few people are on their radar. We know that Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks are people that Triple H would love to sign, but Tony Khan’s roster is loaded with talent aside from The Elite.
AEW also has a lot of choices to make as the company carries on through 2023. Only time will tell what the pro wrestling landscape looks like by the time 2024 rolls around, but right now there are a lot more questions than answers.
