Cody Rhodes is all set to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 39. Cody has been positioned as a main event player since his return to WWE last year. However, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff thinks The American Nightmare wouldn’t have reached his current level of success had he been a part of WCW in its prime.

During an interview with Wrestle Binge, Eric Bischoff claimed that Cody Rhodes would not have been as significant or noteworthy as the nWo in WCW. However, Bischoff who is a fan of Rhodes, did heap praise on the former AEW TNT Champion.

Eric Bischoff was asked if Cody Rhodes, the former Executive Vice President of AEW would have been a top player on Monday Nitro in 1996. The year 1996 was hands-down the best-ever year for WCW, with Bischoff leading the company to unimaginable heights, courtesy of the nWo.

“Everything [in WCW] was different in ’96. Honestly, it’s hard to say what I would have done back then. But, man, the nWo was so strong and so hot, and all of the focus was on the nWo for a good year and a half or two years. I think it would have been hard for me to put anybody ahead of the nWo at that time.”

Eric Bischoff noted that while Cody Rhodes may have done well, he would nowhere be near nWo. In fact, no individual or group could ever eclipse the nWo in the mid-to-late 1990s due to how over the group was with the fans.

“So Cody [Rhodes] would have still been a very important part of Nitro, but I don’t think he would have been so important that he would have gotten more attention, if you will, on television than the nWo because it was just too hot.”

WWE has been positioning Cody Rhodes as the company’s top babyface, so much so that fans are also willing to see The American Nightmare capture both titles from The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania. Whether Cody is successful in his WrestleMania pursuits remains to be seen.
