WWE has a lot going on, and records are meant to be broken, even personal achievements. Now, Gunther has another notch in his belt as he carried the IC Title.
Gunther made his WWE debut for NXT UK on January, 12th 2019 at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool. The wrestling world wasn’t ready for Gunther, as the Austrian wrestler immediately made an impact on the WWE scene. At NXT TakeOver: New York, Walter defeated Dunne to win the WWE United Kingdom Championship, ending Dunne’s record-setting reign at 685 days.
Gunther’s main roster run has been nothing short of extraordinary. From delivering phenomenal matches on SmackDown to making his opponents look like a million bucks, The Ring General is well on his way to becoming a key figure on the roster. In fact, Gunther has now reached a historic milestone in less than a year since his main roster debut.
The reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther has now cemented himself among the 10 longest-reigning Intercontinental Champions in WWE History at 235 days. The Ring General has now surpassed Pat Patterson’s inaugural reign and Cody Rhodes’ 233-day domination.
The next longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champions on the list are Shelton Benjamin at 244 days and The Rock at 264 days.
This isn’t the first time Gunther has reached a milestone of this magnitude in WWE. The 35-year-old Superstar’s 870-day reign as the NXT UK Champion is the longest for the now-defunct title.
Gunther set yet another record at WWE Royal Rumble 2023 this past weekend. He entered the Men’s Rumble match at #1 and became the ultimate Iron Man, lasting longer than any wrestler in the history of a traditional Royal Rumble match. Gunther lasted in the ring for 71 minutes, surpassing Rey Mysterio’s 62-minute match-winning performance during the 2006 Royal Rumble.
