Over the years, WWE has produced many eyebrow-raising storylines and feuds. The storytelling involved in these programs has served as a precedent for modern feuds in pro wrestling. One such controversial storyline in WWE history came between two long-time friends and one of their seven-year-old sons.
Before becoming a WWE Superstar, Dominik Mysterio was at the center of an unorthodox storyline in which Eddie Guerrero claimed to be his father. The popular storyline, often referred to as “The Custody Of Dominik Mysterio” began after Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio won the WWE Tag Team Championship at No Way Out 2005.
In May 2005, Eddie Guerrero threatened to reveal a secret about the Mysterio family, and the storyline continued to grow personal with both Eddie’s and Rey’s families getting involved. It was eventually revealed that Rey wasn’t Dominik’s dad and that Eddie himself was his biological father. Eddie claimed that because his marriage was going through hard times, he had a child out of wedlock, Dominik. As Rey Mysterio and his wife were having trouble conceiving, Eddie left Dominik on their doorstep for them to raise.
The Custody Of Dominik Ladder Match at SummerSlam 2005 saw Rey Mysterio beat Eddie Guerrero with the help of Dominik and Eddie’s wife Vickie Guerrero. Mr. 619 got custody of Dominik and the storyline which received mixed reviews was finally put to rest. Moreover, fans were upset about Eddie losing every single match against Rey from WrestleMania to SummerSlam.
In an interview with Wrestling Inc, newly prison-hardened Dominik Mysterio reflected on the bizarre storyline. The young wrestler wished that Eddie Guerrero had won his custody instead of Rey Mysterio.
“I feel like I’ve always been drawn to Eddie, whether it’s early 90s Eddie, WCW Eddie, or it’s ‘I’m your papi’ Eddie, and to me, any Eddie is the best Eddie and he’s just the top of the top to me and anything I do is in his honor, man — the mullet, everything. So for me, yeah. He’s the man.”
“Yeah, 100%. And I mean, WWE storyline, he is my dad. So, man. I would’ve loved to have gone home with Uncle Eddie at this point, right? I feel like we would’ve had a really good dynamic at home.”
“I always tell people, I feel like Eddie and my dad slowly planted that seed of me becoming a wrestler without me even knowing when I was eight in that storyline.”
Dominik has been modeling his new character on the late Eddie Guerrero to a certain degree. It was certainly a refreshing, and much needed, change for Dominik Mysterio. Whether he is the second coming of the late Latino heat is yet to be seen.
