After returning from suspension, Kenny Omega has been unstoppable. He and The Young Bucks returned at Full Gear last year to challenge Death Triangle for the AEW Trios Championship. Following that, the two groups would engage in some of the best trios matches ever. During that time, Omega also laid out a challenge to Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Championship.
Omega emerged victorious in a brutal ladder match against Death Triangle, and also defeated Will Ospreay at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 in what is being regarded as the second highest-rated match of all time.
Since the ladder match that took place on AEW Dynamite a couple of weeks ago, Kenny Omega has been absent from AEW television. He hasn’t wrestled since then, and he recently provided a reason for his absence.
Kenny Omega recently spoke to Comicbook.com about these two matches, saying that having both matches back to back served as a wake-up call for him.
“I would say before the Best of Seven series and the Tokyo Dome I was feeling pretty good. And after completing the Best of Seven Series, which culminated in a Ladder Match, and barely being removed from the match that I did with Will Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom, it was kind of a slap in the face from reality being like, ‘Hey, don’t go thinking you’re 100% again.”
He continued to say that he is still feeling the effects of the match, and it will take him a little while longer to recover from it.
“We just let you think that for a couple of weeks (laughs). This is your new 100% so get used to it, kid.’ That was the crashing back down to reality moment for me. Like, okay, I did it. I survived. I’m really proud of this work, but oh boy, it’s going to take a while to recover. It wasn’t like a ‘give me a 24-hour’ kind of thing. It’s been over a week and I’m still feeling it.”
It should be no surprise that those two matches took a toll on him. It was brave of Omega to compete in a ladder match after he competed in a brutal bout against Ospreay just a few days earlier. However, fans will wait in eager anticipation for his return. Stay tuned to Ringside News as we bring you similar stories.
