A few years ago, Kofimania was the biggest thing in WWE as fans rallied behind Kofi Kingston. It resulted in him winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 in 2019 and he held the title for around six months. It seems Dax Harwood was heartbroken over Kingston losing the WWE Championship to Brock Lesnar.
On the debut episode of WWE Smackdown on FOX, Brock Lesnar challenged Kofi Kingston for the title. In a move that still has fans questioning the booking decision, Brock Lesnar squashed Kofi Kingston in seven seconds in order to win the WWE Championship.
Even a few years on, many people still feel it was a horrible booking decision, as fans felt Kofi Kingston deserved better than to get squashed like that at the hands of The Beast Incarnate.
While speaking on his FTR with Dax Harwood podcast, Dax Harwood talked about Kofi Kingston’s shocking loss to Brock Lesnar. Harwood made it clear that he was heartbroken after the loss.
I was very, very upset. I remember that I texted Kofi. Actually it was a group text with The New Day and myself and Dan [Cash Wheeler]. I apologized to him and I said, ‘I’m so sorry this happened to you, man. We’re so upset. I can’t believe this is for real.’ Not because of anything with Brock, but how much we had worked and how he had worked to get to this point. Especially when we were working with him, with Randy, I saw him outside of Vince’s office or go into Vince’s office every single week to try to make things better, to try to make his championship run better. He worked so hard to be a great champion.
I think a lot of people, maybe they think, ‘Oh, man, his championship run wasn’t successful because of whatever. It wasn’t for lack of trying. Because I saw him every week try his damndest to make something of nothing. It broke all of our hearts, the whole locker room, it broke all of our hearts that that’s where the championship was being taken. Not anything to do with Brock, but because Kofi had worked so hard, and seeing someone work so hard for so long to get this opportunity taken away from him, what would they do to us?”
That squash match was used as a way to introduce Cain Velasquez during SmackDown’s FOX debut. In the end, it only resulted in one Saudi Arabian match for Cain and Brock. Then WWE released Velasquez a short time later.
Ever since his shocking loss, Kofi Kingston has never been back in the main event title scene, and it is unlikely he will ever win a main event title again.
