CM Punk launched a scathing rant about Colt Cabana, Hangman Page, and The Young Bucks during the post-AEW All Out media scrum. His verbal assault on all parties present caused significant harm to his reputation and has had ongoing ramifications within AEW. It only got worse after the subsequent brawl afterward. Many people have called for Tony Khan to release CM Punk due to his actions, but it seems Khan has no plans to release Punk even now.
Since the All Out event, CM Punk has been absent from wrestling due to an injury to his triceps and underwent surgery to address it. He is currently recovering. While some fans are not excited about the possibility of his return to AEW, others are eagerly awaiting the return of the Second City Saint to the ring.
The company has been more or less mum when it has come to CM Punk’s status in general. Since the backstage brawl controversy, CM Punk has not been mentioned on AEW television.
According to Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was reported that Tony Khan has kept CM Punk on ice for the time being. In addition to that, it was noted that Khan has no plans to release CM Punk.
“We’re still months away from when Tony Khan will have to make a call regarding Punk. It’s not the easiest call because of all that happened, but Punk was a ratings draw and ratings are weaker than before generally even if there’s positive house show movement.
Right now from the Punk side, the belief is that Tony Khan has put Punk on ice for now, as there are no ideas to use him that have been presented but no talk at all of late to release him either.”
Tony Khan recently refused to comment on removing CM Punk from the AEW: Fight Forever video game, among other things. His status will remain a huge topic of discussion for a long time by the looks of it.
CM Punk is also back at the gym while he still recovers from surgery. Only time will tell whether CM Punk will be making his return to AEW television, as it seems unlikely right now.
