Sting was one of the most well-known stars in the industry during his time with WCW. He had numerous history-making bouts; however, a one-on-one match with the Undertaker was a big miss in his career. The Icon has now explained why that match failed to take place.
Sting opened up about his career in a heart-to-heart interview with D Magazine. There was one dream match that wrestling fans wanted out of him: a match with Undertaker. He wanted to have this big match before his contract ended, but circumstances posed to be the biggest barrier in the quest.
The Undertaker match at WrestleMania would have been Sting’s grand send-off before his TNA contract expired in January 2014. He texted Paul Levesque and Vince McMahon regarding this. McMahon was apparently up for it, but Undertaker’s match with Brock Lesnar was already set for the event.
According to Sting, that was the only time he actually brought up the Undertaker match idea. Unfortunately, the match didn’t materialize, and he ultimately ended up being matched up against Triple H in his WrestleMania debut. Sting went on to lose the match, and he never tried for a match against the Deadman again.
Several months later, Sting suffered a neck injury in his lone WWE main event. That sad happening took place in a match-up against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015 thanks to a bad bucklebomb. Sting later made his retirement announcement during his acceptance speech at the 2016 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony after the company refused to clear him.
Sting vs The Undertaker never happened, and the fans missed out on an amazing card. Sting is currently in an alliance with Darby Allin in AEW, and his in-ring career is not over in Tony Khan’s company. The legendary star’s contract ends in 2023, and it’ll be interesting to find out his future plans.
