Mick Foley had many career-defining moments that cement his legacy as a true hardcore legend in the business. His three faces of Foley appeared on the same night at the 1998 Royal Rumble, and Mick recently revealed the entire process behind his rumble program.
Mrs. Foley’s Baby Boy has been known to have three popular gimmicks in his career, Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind. Every character had their own demeanor and personality that was completely opposite to each other.
All three personas of Mick Foley made their appearance in the 1998 Royal Rumble match, starting with Cactus Jack as the first entrant, followed by Mankind and then donning the Dude Love attire in his final attempt. Foley recently detailed how the WWE crew helped him to pull it off during the latest edition of “Foley Is Pod.
“There’d be a team of people working on me,” Foley said. “I’d come back and there’d be people — I’d probably have the one boot going on [while someone was working on the other], and even when it came time to put on the other boot, we had someone moving here and here.”
Mick Foley further elaborated on having to go through this multiple times in his career. If he had to change one thing about the whole process, it would have been the boots he wore at the time, and for good reason.
“I have shoes to unlace. I was a 17-and-a half-inch man. I wore all three characters at the boots that went up almost to the knees. I think Mankind’s are probably 15, Cactus went way up there. If I had to change one thing, it would’ve been Velcro all the way around. I would’ve invested in Velcro for all three of those pairs of boots.”
The WWE Hall of Famer came up short that night in winning the Royal Rumble match, despite three attempts. However, that did not overshadow the effort and amazing performances he put out over the next few years to carve out one of the greatest careers in WWE.
