Wardlow was one of AEW’s very own homegrown stars who showed quite the promise. He was heavily pushed in 2022, as the past year saw him have a feud with MJF, a short stint with the TNT championship, and a storyline with Samoa Joe.
Despite receiving heavy screen time for a major part of 2022, he was nowhere to be seen in 2023. There is belief that the reason Wardlow fell off the radar is due to having backstage heat.
In a recent episode of Keepin’ it 100, Konnan addressed the issue of Wardlow’s booking. He praised Mr. Mayhem for his personality, among other things, and then Konnan expressed his sentiments towards Wardlow’s treatment around the turn of the year.
“I’ve met him a myriad of times and he’s always very respectful, very professional, always dresses nice, looks good. He’s a star, and you’ve made a star which is not easy, and then you let it flame out. That’s your fault, unless he has heat. And the stupidest things can get you heat nowadays. So people are like walking on eggshells. But bro, heat or no heat, you should have pushed that guy. He should not have lost to Joe clean like he did, and then afterwards he got bum-rushed again.”
The last year was quite controversial for AEW. The All Out media scrum between The Young Bucks and CM Punk seriously undermined the reputation of AEW as a major wrestling promotion.
The aftermath of the All Out media scrum was pretty dragged out and led to CM Punk being ousted from the company. Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks on the other hand made their in-ring return at AEW Full Gear in a bid to reclaim the AEW World Trios Championships that were stripped from them following their suspension after the All Out Media scrum.
If Wardlow truly does have backstage heat, it makes sense for AEW to be on edge. It remains to be seen when or if Wardlow will make a return to AEW screens, and to what capacity. For more updates, stay tuned to Ringside News.
