Vince McMahon made headlines for all the wrong reasons last year after he was involved in a hush-money scandal, which forced him to retire as WWE Chairman. That did not last as long as expected, with McMahon returning to WWE last week and then seizing control of the company. He is now back as the Executive Chairman of WWE and is in the process of selling the company to Saudi Arabia. In fact, McMahon had been working on the deal immediately after his retirement.
Vince McMahon became the Executive Chairman of WWE after Stephanie McMahon’s exit, and Nick Khan became the sole CEO of the company. There was already a story that McMahon and Khan had a deal to sell WWE. A report soon spread that WWE was going to be sold to Saudi Arabia.
That fear turned out to be true, as WWE reportedly agreed to sell the company to Saudi Arabia. This shocking turn of events sent shockwaves across the pro wrestling world, as many are simply condemning WWE now.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed WWE’s potential deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and when Vince McMahon might have started working on it. It was noted that McMahon got to work on the deal right after he retired last year.
One thing that we do know is that ever since Vince was ousted, he did open up talks with the Saudis. I mean, this didn’t come in the last week. His coming back was obviously to close the deal, that, perhaps the people who are running the company, for all the reasons we were talking about, probably felt very uneasy about the deal closing because they are, perhaps, looking out for the longterm future of their company and their own asses too. So, that’s another layer. Obviously, the people on the board, Nick Khan and Triple H, who voted one way before [to keep Vince McMahon out of the Board of Directors] and they voted another way today.
WWE has reportedly agreed on their sale with Saudi Arabia in principle, so the deal is not finalized just yet. That being said, the deal might just be done by the end of this week. If so, WWE talent will have to deal with a lot of changes.
The pro wrestling world is ever-changing and WWE continues to be at the forefront of every change. Keep checking back here at Ringside News as we continue monitoring this ongoing situation.
