Santino Marella made a name for himself in WWE during the late 2000s to early 2010s, where he was largely booked as a comedic character. Marella took little time to get over, thanks to his ridiculous Italian accent, his unibrow and perfect comedic timing. That being said, Marella has also won championship gold in the past, including the Intercontinental Championship. It seems WWE had different plans for his Intercontinental Title run.
Santino Marella made his debut on Monday Night RAW back in 2007, which took place in Milan, Italy. He was portrayed as a member of the audience and ended up beating Umaga for the Intercontinental Championship, after some help from Bobby Lashley.
Santino Marella would eventually drop the title back to Umaga. While speaking to Wrestling News, Santino Marella talked about initial plans for his first run as the Intercontinental Champion.
“Originally, we were gonna go like, I think the idea was to go right up to the record and then lose it like a day before. But you know, plans changed and we dropped the title somewhere on a European tour and that was it.”
Marella also recently revealed that he joined WWE to make Superstars break character. Following his WWE release, Marella largely competed in the indies. However, his time as an in-ring competitor is done as he is focused on other projects now. Regardless, fans will forever be grateful for his contributions to WWE.
