Athena debuted in NXT in 2015 under the name Ember Moon. As soon as she arrived in NXT, she was considered the future of the women’s division. She lived up to the expectations as she captured both the NXT Women’s Championship and the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship.
However, her tenure with the company ended in 2021 when she was released from her contract. Athena recently revealed to Chris Jericho on this Talk is Jericho podcast that she wanted to quit WWE even before being released.
“When I left WWE, that was the one thing I wanted to do, I wanted to figure out a way to get to AEW. When I walked out of that building, I thought, ‘How in the blue hell do I get ahold of Tony Khan?’ Between my rep and everything, we had kind of been in talks in December to see if there was interest. During my 90-day situation where I couldn’t do anything, ‘Ah, just kind of threw away the dream job. Do I want to wrestle anymore?'”
Athena finally realized her dream of getting to AEW when she appeared at AEW Double of Nothing earlier this year. Since her arrival in AEW, she has been impressive and even won the ROH Women’s World Championship. It will be interesting to see if she will win the AEW World Championship in the future.
