MJF became a prominent name in AEW by making headlines with his unfiltered opinion, and his unforgettable matches. Early on in his AEW journey, after Cody Rhodes and The Nightmare Family were no longer MJF’s mentors on-screen after he defeated Rhodes in a one-on-one match at Revolution 2020 in February 2020, MJF vanished. At the time, this was MJF’s biggest victory, but the excitement faded a little because he received little television time in the months that followed.

MJF always considered he could generate a greater response from the crowd than anybody else, ever since he joined AEW at its very first pay-per-view in 2019. He maintained his confidence that he would be responsible for the company’s destiny, even though others had doubts about it.

The Salt of the Earth recently appeared in an interview with Sports Illustrated, during which he discussed his opinion about AEW’s decision to sit him out.

“People might not remember this, but after my feud with Cody Rhodes [in 2020], I was sat. I was sat out. Literally. I had to sit behind the guardrail.

I sat beside Shawn Spears and Shawn Dean and Sonny Kiss and all these other people, and I had to sit there and watch the shows. I remember thinking to myself, ‘Are you guys f—ing stupid? I’m literally the biggest star here. What’s happening here?’”

Between March 11th, 2020, and May 13th, 2020, MJF did not wrestle at all. He made a comeback that summer to participate in a feud with Jungle Boy and his previous partners, Luchasaurus and Marko Stunt. Everybody involved in that rivalry has been through many changes, but MJF has possibly undergone the most.

Now, MJF is sitting on top of AEW as World Champion. Only time will tell what’s next for him as the bidding war of 2024 for his contract approaches.
