Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts is now an All Elite Wrestling star in a manager role, but he spent a lot of time in the ring. He worked with different superstars during his time as an activity competitor, including Hulk Hogan. Roberts saw the rise of Hulkamania and wanted to be a part of that in a big way.
Jake Roberts talked about how a feud between him and Hulk Hogan was shelved by Vince McMahon after he got a bigger pop than Hulk Hogan during the recent episode of The Snake Pit. The match happened at a live event, and Vince McMahon wasn’t going to risk having Hulk Hogan’s crowd reaction pale in comparison to Roberts.
Hulk Hogan was the babyface and the face of the company, so Vince expected him to get the pop, but things happened otherwise. It led the then Chairman and CEO canceling the match. Roberts admitted that there was a lot of jealously present during that time.
Sure, there was [resentment and jealousy]. I hate to admit that, but there was resentment. There was also jealousy. I wanted to be a part of it, man. And I made the mistake, when we first wrestled, not to do the same old sh**. You know? Not to pattern my match with The Hulkster the way he patterned every match.
WWE sometimes tries out feuds in the live event situation to get the fan reaction before debuting a match on television. It’s a process that is followed even now, and everything works according to the outcome.
Jake Roberts was always considered a villain due to his character. He always worked his way up the roster with his work, but a feud between the two could never make it to the cards. We can only imagine how a Hulk Hogan and Jake Roberts feud would have played out.
