Logan Paul challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship isn’t the first time that a wrestler is challenging for a World Title. David Arquette first competed on an episode of WCW Thunder in a tag team match, where he teamed with DDP to face Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff. That guest run for Arquette certainly sticks with pro wrestling fans.
The match had a stipulation where the person scoring the pinfall would become WCW Champion. David Arquette scored the pinfall for his team and shocked the world by winning the WCW Champion. What seemed like a unique decision turned out to backfire, as Arquette is still considered one of the worst World Champions of all time.
During a recent episode of 83 weeks, Eric Bischoff recalled David Arquette’s run in WCW and said that despite being a Hollywood actor, Arquette was committed to wrestling for WCW. However, they had failed to provide him with sufficient training.
“David Arquette was 100% committed. He was a movie star. He was in a movie…what was it? A Las Vegas movie. There were a bunch of criminals in Las Vegas. I can’t remember what it was, but Arquette was in it with Kevin Costner. It was a great movie. So, I mean, David was a legitimate-looking actor at that point, still is. But he didn’t care. He’s ready to go in there and jump off cages and do all kinds of silly shit. He didn’t care! He was committed. But, we didn’t train him. We didn’t give him the time. We didn’t build the story. That was how you don’t use a celebrity, by the way, just for the record.”
Looking back at David Arquette’s reign as WCW Champion, many fans still consider his reign as the starting point of WCW’s downfall. One can only imagine what would’ve happened if Arquette was trained like a proper wrestler.
