Ric Flair was widely regarded as one of the biggest stars in the world in ’80s. His career has enjoyed a pretty good upwards trajectory and he enjoyed a career unlike no other. There isn’t anything he hasn’t done in the business.

Just like his career had plenty of ups, there were also quite a few downs in his career. However, one of the most embarrassing downs of his career took place in 1990. WCW needed a fresh opponent for Sting. This resulted in the creation of the mysterious Black Scorpion character. There was only one issue with the character – they didn’t know who would be behind the mask yet.

The character would be portrayed by Al Perez until he left the promotion owing to a pay dispute. WCW were desperate to rescue this storyline, which was on the receiving end of some criticism from fans. The management turned to Ric Flair to portray the character, which he agreed to do. The match between Black Scorpion and Sting took place at Starrcade where Sting won. Following the match, the Black Scorpion was forced to unmask revealing himself to be Ric Flair, undermining the whole premise of the storyline.

Ric Flair recently addressed the Black Scorpion gimmick on his To Be The Man podcast, calling it one of the most humiliating things he has been through.

“I did have the ability to make the call. I took one for the team. Do you think I like laying underneath that ring in St. Louis? A building that I sold out no less than 30 times as the NWA Champion?

That was the most humiliating thing I’ve ever been through in my life, and with how I conducted myself afterward. But I’m never the sh*ts.”

This gimmick was just the beginning of Ric Flair’s problems with WCW, and he soon left the promotion a year later. He would then go on to wrestle for the WWE, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the younger wrestlers.
