Carmelo Hayes established himself as one of the best things about the current version of NXT. His impeccable in-ring skills and athleticism helped him win over fans as well. He has developed a lot in NXT and Shawn Michaels has taken quite a liking to him. In fact, Michaels sometimes has to reign Hayes in on things in NXT.
Carmelo Hayes beat Roderick Strong to unify the NXT Cruiserweight and North American Championships at NXT: New Year’s Evil on January 4, 2022. He eventually lose the titles, but remains a huge star even then.
While speaking to Fightful, Carmelo Hayes talked about his growth in NXT. Hayes then revealed that Shawn Michaels sometimes has to rein him in on things on NXT, especially things regarding backstage culture.
He mentioned Michaels has to rein him in sometimes on things, and is a “do as I say, not as I did” type of teacher, because Michaels often made career highlights of defying authority. Carmelo said that some of the things Michaels reins him in on are usually cultural stuff that Carmelo would need to explain to him due to the generation gap. Specifically, Michaels used to get things through on television that he probably shouldn’t have been able to during the DX days, so he’s well aware that younger talent will try to do that with him as well.
Carmelo Hayes is set to be a part of the Iron Survivor match at NXT Deadline. We will have to wait and see whether Hayes will be victorious in the match or not.
