Shelton Benjamin is a true veteran in the world of professional wrestling. He had a couple of stints in WWE, where he saw success as a singles and tag team star. His athletic ability could never be denied but it seems it wasn’t enough for WWE when it came to becoming a World Champion.
Benjamin has achieved success in the WWE by winning the Intercontinental Championship, the Tag Team Championship, the United States Championship. However, a World Title has always eluded him.
While speaking on the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Matt Hardy was asked why Benjamin didn’t receive a much better push. Hardy believed it was due to him not having a larger-than-life personality.
I believe if you had a young Shelton Benjamin come along today, it would change a lot. Back then, they were looking for larger-than-life personalities, people that really bonded with the crowd, and I feel like they didn’t see that as much in Shelton as they would have liked to.
They knew, from an athletic perspective, he was just unbelievable. He was unreal. So I think if Shelton came along today, I think it would be changed, and he would definitely be programmed a lot higher than he was back then.”
Shelton Benjamin isn’t a regular feature on WWE programming, but his veteran knowledge is always invaluable to those who need it. Benjamin is happy in WWE now and that’s all that matters.
