Pat McAfee is credited as one of the most talented and creative individuals in the WWE. He proved his worth, both as an in-ring competitor and a successful WWE commentator, on Friday Night SmackDown. However, his ring gear at WrestleMania earlier this year had a last minute change before his scheduled match.
The former NFL player began his WWE career in 2018, initially being involved in a feud with Adam Cole. Pat McAfee joined the SmackDown commentary booth alongside Michael Cole as a color commentator in April 2021. Fans and critics have regarded McAfee as one of the most charismatic commentators ever since bringing a whole new direction to the role.
Pat McAfee was a part of a match against Austin Theory at WrestleMania 38, a match that was granted by Vince McMahon during the former WWE Chairman’s appearance on his podcast before the Show of Shows. WWE costume designer Sarath Ton recently revealed that McAfee’s gear for WrestleMania changed at the very last minute. He spoke about this during his appearance on the Notsam Wrestling podcast.
“He had brought his stuff,” Ton said. “He goes, ‘Hey, is there anything you can do to help me to do to help make it a little more WrestleMania?’ So, we just used like, jet black Swarovski crystals and really give it some sparkle. Because, at the end of the day, you can come up with the most elaborate wrestling-ey like, outfit for someone, but if it betrays the character, then you’re kind of like, now, you’re just playing wrestler. You’re just playing dress up. So, you want to keep that same feel Pat has, but, you know, a little pizazz to it.”
Pat McAfee also went to wrestle Vince McMahon in an impromptu match, right after his bout with Austin Theory at WrestleMania 38 with the former WWE Chairman beating McAfee. He has currently taken time off from WWE to serve as an analyst on ESPN’s “College GameDay.”
