CM Punk has always been the center of controversy in the pro wrestling business. Punk has been absent from AEW ever since the infamous All Out backstage brawl with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks. While the three superstars returned to AEW television, Punk has not. Now, a current AEW superstar has apparently given an update on CM Punk’s status with the company.
The Best in the World made his return to the wrestling business after a seven-year hiatus in 2021. CM Punk joined Tony Khan’s AEW and was immediately positioned to be a marquee attraction for the promotion. He even reigned as a two-time AEW World Champion for the company.
CM Punk’s last title win came on the same fateful night he was involved in the backstage brawl with The Elite following the AEW All Out media scrum. Now, it appears that Stokely Hathaway has seemingly confirmed Punk’s exit from the company. The manager of The Firm spoke on the situation during his appearance on Renee Paquette’s podcast ‘The Sessions‘.
“Everything that was supposed to happen with The Firm did not happen. Back at All out, what happened immediately after the pay-per-view, that was a huge part of it.
“(The person) we were supposed to directly feud with is no longer in the company.
“That was one thing I was looking forward to because I was hand-chosen for that role. I’m just going to say it. I don’t know the specifics about people choosing sides. I just know that CM Punk said, ‘Hey. I want to work with this guy’. That means a lot, regardless of what has happened.”
The latest word going around is that CM Punk is still under contract with AEW. The talks for a buyout of Punk’s contract came to a hold due to negotiations surrounding the non-compete clause in his contract.
