Karl Anderson returned to WWE last month, but he didn’t tie up all of his loose ends outside the company prior to that. He is still the NEVER Openweight Champion in NJPW, but a previously scheduled title defense didn’t happen for a variety of reasons. Despite that, Anderson and NJPW are still trying to work something out with WWE for a match in the future.
The O.C. faced off against The Judgment Day at WWE Crown Jewel on November 5th. However, Anderson was previously booked for a title defense at NJPW Battle Autumn on the same day.
In the end, Anderson did not defend his title but he wasn’t stripped of it either. While speaking on After The Bell With Corey Graves, Karl Anderson revealed that he is trying to work something out with WWE regarding a future match in NJPW.
“I am going to go back at some point, we are just trying to work out the dates.” So far, nothing has been confirmed in regards to when he will defend the title, but he also admitted that, “sometimes with the WWE schedule, it’s not possible.”
“With Japan, you’re knocking out four days at least, because you’ve got to travel two days before to get there the day before to work there the day of. Because if you leave the day before you’re not going to make the show the next day, they’re 13 hours ahead.”
It is likely Anderson will defend his NJPW NEVER Openweight Title at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th, 2023. It remains to be seen whether that will end up happening or not now.
