Matt Cardona was known as Zack Ryder during his time in WWE, where he didn’t have the best of beginnings. Ryder eventually got over with fans, but that didn’t last long. In fact, he tried to get rid of his WWE gimmick.
After Cardona was released by WWE, he reinvented himself by working in companies such as AEW, Impact Wrestling and especially GCW. Cardona has truly become an indie darling.
While speaking to Kevin Kellam, Matt Cardona admitted that he was actually trying to get rid of his Zack Ryder gimmick in WWE but had a difficult time doing so because as a wrestler, you don’t write the show.
“The ‘woo, woo, woo,’ the headband, the sunglasses, it’s dead. And I was trying to get away from that while I was Zack Ryder in WWE, but you can’t write the show.
So if I’m trying to be more serious, but you are booked to be not so serious, it is what it is. That’s why when I was let go, I was like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Not that there were any handcuffs on, but the handcuffs were gone, and I was able to become the new version of me, whatever that was going to be,”
Cardona would recently mentioned that he would return to WWE if he got to keep his name. Matt Cardona also recently claimed responsibility for AEW’s existence. It remains to be seen whether he will ever return to WWE or not.
