Shawn Michaels is one of the most well-known and influential professional wrestlers of all time. The two-time WWE Hall of Famer may have succeeded with a fantastic career, but getting there wasn’t an easy journey for him. Drug addiction had a tremendous impact on him, and The Heartbreak Kid found himself the victim of a real-life beatdown in 1995 that was allegedly carried out by six Marines.
HBK appeared on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast and talked about a wide range of topics. He also reflected on the 1995 brawl with six marines that became infamous and resulted in the Heartbreak Kid being admitted to the hospital.
“I know as much as what I’ve known back then because I was all hammered and then I woke up in the hospital.”
Michaels does not discount any of the information that has been given to him regarding what happened that evening because forgetting huge portions of his day was common during that time. It was a never-ending cycle of overindulging, working, and repeating the process.
“I don’t know how accurate that is because we were all not in the best shape. I’m sure I was being obnoxious, but I have no recollection of any of that.”
HBK would often sign off on his release from the hospital despite the doctor’s advice and regardless of his condition. Both his profession and addiction have similar underlying characteristics.
“The last thing I can remember is dropping my coat off at the coat check. Then I’m waking up in the hospital. Unfortunately, I was in that position a lot of times. I would wake up in an emergency room and go get three or four more hours of sleep, go to the gym, go wrestle. I was very functioning.”
Michaels also discussed his wrestling career in the same interview. When asked about his wrestling role models, he mentioned Wahoo McDaniels and Tully Blanchard. Both of them were big names in the Southwest Championship Wrestling promotion.
