CM Punk debuted last year at AEW Rampage: The First Dance and instantly became one of their top stars. He worked with several top stars since then, especially against Adam Page, Despite his run with the company, it was plagued with injuries. It turns out one of those injuries caused All Out plans to change.
At AEW All Out, CM Punk defeated Jon Moxley to become a 2-time AEW World Champion. Right after that, MJF came out and confronted Punk. A lot of things have happened since then, especially due to Punk relinquishing the title.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that AEW planned on having CM Punk square off against MJF. However, Punk got hurt again and that changed plans.
[Tony Khan] put the championship on [Moxley] when Punk got hurt the first time, the Interim Championship, because he thought it was the best guy for the job — the guy to, you know, have the best situation to build up Punk before Punk faced MJF. The original plan for Chicago was Punk and MJF, but because Punk got hurt and had to win the championship, things changed.”
Jon Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Title at AEW Grand Slam this week. We will have to wait and see when MJF will decide to challenge him for the title. CM Punk is out of action for months due to an injury he suffered at All Out.
