Cody Rhodes left AEW back in February, and fans were certainly surprised by this. Prior to his exit, Rhodes was one of the highlights of AEW television. He helped put over numerous talents during his time there, including the likes of Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin, MJF and many more.
Rhodes had the first high profile feud in AEW, as he began an intense feud with Chris Jericho in 2019. It culminated in a match for the AEW World Title after Full Gear 2019.
Rhodes last the match, meaning he could never challenge for the title ever again. While speaking on the latest episode of Talk is Jericho, Jericho explained that it was Rhodes’ idea from the very beginning.
“He was adamant. I’m still not too sure why he put that rule that he can never challenge for the world title again. For whatever reason, that was completely his idea. I guess maybe he wanted people to know that he wasn’t just gonna win the title. He wanted to be the face of the company.
We’re all faces of the company but he really embraced the EVP part of it. The other guys kind of did it in the shadows, but he was doing it on camera and all that sort of thing. So I think he wanted people to understand that he wasn’t gonna take advantage of this position that he was in and he did the ‘I’ll never fight for the world title.’”
Cody Rhodes hinted at making his return during the Royal Rumble match next year. No definite time frame has been given for his return to the ring. We will have to wait and see whether he does return during the event.
