AEW Dynamite’s main event for Cleveland on August 24th stunned the pro wrestling world after it was announced. The planned All Out main event between Jon Moxley and CM Punk to unify the AEW World Titles was moved up a week and a half. This was apparently Moxley’s idea.
According to Sean Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall, Jon Moxley was behind the idea of the AEW Heavyweight title fight being moved up and the higher ups in the company agreed with him. Apprently Punk went along with the idea as well.
AEW sources indicated that Jon Moxley was in favor of the move, and one source even indicated that it was his idea and pitch, and All Elite Wrestling went with it. The same source also said that “eventually CM Punk agreed to it.” We haven’t learned if this was connected to any of the reported issues with CM Punk last week. Grapsody’s Will Washington noted on the air that he’d heard there was an idea in play a few days before to increase ticket sales and add buzz to the Cleveland AEW show. Fightful has reached out to AEW officials, who did not respond when asked for comment on this story.
We’ve not been told of creative plans heading out of this match.
The decision was not the original plan, and that “multiple plans” for AEW All Out had changed.
We’ll see what happens with the latest epidode of AEW Dynamite in the main event of Jon Moxley vs CM Punk. It should be an eye-opener for that episode, but we still have no idea how the AEW World Title will be represented at All Out.
