Gunther had a generation-defining run in NXT UK as he became the longest-reigning champion in modern WWE by holding the NXT UK Title for a record 870 days. He dropped the title to Ilja Dragunov at NXT TakeOver 36.

Gunther finally came to the US as part of the NXT roster as well. Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser made their main roster debut on Friday Night Smackdown earlier this year.

Gunther also won the Intercontinental Championship back in June. In the main event of this week’s WWE SmackDown, Gunther defended his title against Shinsuke Nakamura. It was as hard hitting as fans expected and they truly went to war with each other. In the end, Gunther reigned supreme with a devastating powerbomb.

Following the conclusion of Friday Night Smackdown, Gunther took to Twitter and made it clear that WWE is all about professional wrestling now.
