During the pandemic, Johnny Gargano and his wife Candice LeRae formed a heel faction known as The Way. The group also consisted of Austin Theory and Indie Hartwell. Although Gargano’s faction was meant to be a heel act, they did have some funny interactions and segments on NXT. According to Gargano, that was done on purpose.
While speaking on the “What’s NeXt?” stage show at Starrcast V, Gargano revealed that he wanted to still make people smile even as a heel. He intended to create a bit of a nice escape for those watching during the pandemic. While the group was meant to be, as Gargano puts it, “really intense,” The Way ended up almost being a comedic act on NXT.
Yeah, a whole different dynamic you never got a chance to see. But when the pandemic happened, I kinda sat back and I was like man, there’s so much negativity right now in the world, and I know I’m a heel, but I want to do what I can to put a smile on people’s faces. I wanna make people laugh and smile and be entertained during this time period. That’s why we focused more on the entertainment than on the pure being a heel aspect.
Gargano also said that he wanted to make sure Theory and Hartwell knew not all wrestling has to be serious. With Johnny Wrestling still on the outs, perhaps he’s coming up with more funny and clever ideas that he could pitch once he returns to wrestling. As of now, fans would be delighted to hear that Gargano was still looking out for them despite being a bad guy.
