Claudio Castagnoli used to work in WWE under the ring name Cesaro. The Swiss Superman was widely considered to be one of the most underutilized workers in the promotion, despite being a workhorse.
Castagnoli let his contract expire and quietly parted ways with the WWE on February 24, 2022. His exit shocked fans and peers alike. WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley said Castagnoli’s exit was pro wrestling’s gain.
Castagnoli made his much-anticipated debut for All Elite Wrestling at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view event in June 2022. Castagnoli was handpicked by Bryan Danielson as his replacement for the match against Zack Sabre Jr.
Castagnoli’s former tag partner in the WWE, Jake Hager, recently appeared on Captain’s Corner podcast to talk about his peer’s world title win at ROH: Death Before Dishonor.
“You heard the audience when he came out at Forbidden Door … It’s too bad he went my way, we had to punch each other in the face again, but it’s cool to see, you know, new ROH Champion, World Champion. Guess I’ve got my foot in my mouth saying he’d never be a world champion.”
Castagnoli battled Jonathan Gresham for the ROH World Title at Death Before Dishonor. The Swiss Superman won the big match to kick off the company’s big pay-per-view event.
