Shane McMahon returned to WWE television after a long hiatus during this year’s edition of the Men’s Royal Rumble match. His performance in the match was not necessarily anything to write home about.
Shane McMahon had a substantial amount of heat on himself for taking over the men’s Royal Rumble match booking as McMahon simply went into business for himself.
Ringside News exclusively reported at the time that Shane McMahon was nixed from the Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania. It is important to note that he was never “fired,” because Shane was never an employee of the company. After that, creative plans for Shane McMahon changed due to all that heat.
Vince McMahon ultimately had no choice but to fire his son in the end. McMahon was frustrated over Vince shooting down his Royal Rumble changes.
According to Sean Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall, Vince McMahon was heard backstage telling others that his son “would never get another pop in this company as long as I’m around,” after the Royal Rumble fiasco.
It was added that the statement was stated “in the heat of the moment” but Sapp’s source believed that McMahon’s frustration with Shane at the time was “extreme, but justified” due to the fact that he reportedly “compromised Brock Lesnar’s satisfaction” with the Rumble match that night. With Vince McMahon retired from WWE, we wonder whether Shane McMahon will ever return to WWE as well.
