The pro wrestling world has seen a huge shift over the last 24 hours. Vince McMahon officially retired from his duties with WWE. That move coincided with Triple H being named EVP of Talent Relations for the company and Stephanie McMahon being named co-CEO. Many believe big changes are afoot.
When Triple H was in charge of NXT, he was able to attract the top independent wrestling talent from around the world. Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, Samoa Joe, Adam Cole, and a plethora of other huge names were brought into the WWE fold that many fans would have never expected. Even still, there are a lot of wrestlers who have claimed they’d never work for WWE under any circumstances.
With Vince McMahon’s departure, that could change over time. On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez gave a very good example of how a wrestler could change their mind after speaking in absolutes. While there is no evidence that he is interested or thinking about leaving AEW, Alvarez used Darby Allin as an example.
“We had an interview with Darby Allin on the Jericho Cruise and he made it abundantly clear that he would never, ever consider, not for one second, going to NXT. And the reality is, he was right. I mean, his size, there was virtually zero chance that he would ever have any chance whatsoever on the main roster.
But, if Triple H ends up the head of talent relations and he ends up with power in booking, and you look at what he did when he had NXT, I mean, I certainly would not leave today if I were Darby if my contract were up today. But a year from now? I mean, if you’re seeing all shapes and sizes getting pushed on WWE television, I mean, I would think about it and I absolutely would not think about it if Vince McMahon were still in charge of the main roster, and I don’t think he’s the only guy.”
Alvarez went on to say that if the person in charge of WWE is open-minded about different sizes and looks, a lot of people would have to consider signing on. Many wrestlers have said that they would never even think about it. Depending on how things change at the top, several big names could have a change of heart given enough time.
