Since last year, WWE moved away from recruiting indie wrestlers, because they are looking for cross-over athletes they can train to be Superstars. This move was met with a lot of concern as well. WWE might be signing indie wrestlers again, marking a possible early departure from their previous edict.
The company does still sign some talent from the independent circuit, but the focus is on scouting attractive college athletes and training them as pro wrestlers. We’ve seen this with the new crop of NXT 2.0 talent, from Bron Breakker to Nikkita Lyons.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has contacted a number of independent wrestlers to see if are interested in doing a tryout.
While the idea is still to recruit good looking college or other athletes and train them to be wrestlers, they have contacted some indie talent for tryouts in Nashville over SummerSlam week.
The company is focused on recruiting younger talent from different sports, as evident by their Las Vegas tryouts recruits last year. Regardless, indie talent will always have a place in WWE, because they are the true workers. We’ll have to see what the roster looks like in a few years as WWE cultivates their next era of Superstars.
