Thunder Rosa had another successful defense of her AEW Women’s World Championship at last night’s Forbidden Door pay-per-view. Rosa defeated Toni Storm to continue her title reign, which has now surpassed 100 days. AEW has been looking to Japan to find her next challenger.
It was reported that Tony Khan was interested in setting up a match between Thunder Rosa and Miyu Yamashita, who is considered the ‘ace’ of Tokyo Joshi Pro. It was uncertain whether that match would take place in Japan or the United States on an AEW show.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that it might be both. There is a definite match that will happen in Japan. It sounds like AEW would also like to run it back in the states.
“She [Thunder Rosa] is wrestling Miyu Yamashita and… I don’t know 100%, but I’ve certainly been led to believe that they will have a match in Japan and then they will have a rematch in the United States for the championship, but we’ll see how it plays out. She’s definitely got the match in Japan on, I think it’s July the 7th.”
AEW is hoping to bring in the best of the best to challenge Thunder Rosa for the title. Despite some very good matches, her championship run has been called lackluster by many. Yamashita is one of the biggest names on the Japanese Joshi scene and could have a great international program with Rosa.
We will have to wait and see if the match does happen in the United States. For now, the two will clash on July 7 in Japan. Fans of Japanese women’s wrestling could be in for a treat if AEW can bring the bout stateside.
