Vince McMahon’s appearance on last week’s WWE SmackDown came as a surprise to many. McMahon is currently under investigation for allegedly paying hush money to an employee to keep an affair quiet. McMahon’s presence on television upset many within the company.
McMahon intended to show the WWE Universe that he was not going to run from the allegations. Vince previously stated that he would cooperate with the investigation and accept its findings. Many believed his TV appearance was nothing more than an attempt at a ratings grab.
Those within WWE likely had no idea what Vince McMahon was going to say. According to a story behind Fightful’s paywall, there was no producer for Vince’s SmackDown segment. It was also not listed on any internal script rundowns.

Vince McMahon is still in control of the creative side of WWE, so this comes as no surprise. McMahon’s promo was seen by many as a power play. That certainly came across as Vince confidently approached the ring, spoke briefly, and walked out with a mic drop.
It remains to be seen if Vince McMahon will continue to appear on WWE television as the investigation continues. Many were put off by his display of control. McMahon wants to give the impression that its business as usual, and as long as he has creative control, he will be able to put forth whatever narrative he pleases.
