Vince McMahon will appear on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown amidst one of the biggest scandals he has ever faced. McMahon is under investigation for allegedly paying off a WWE employee to keep quiet about an affair. The situation is serious enough that Vince stepped down from his position as WWE CEO while the investigation is ongoing.
To many, Vince McMahon appearing on television after everything that happened comes across as tasteless. CNBC has reported that McMahon’s appearance on SmackDown will be “in-character.” The report has been met with negativity, as many fans believe making a wrestling angle out of a serious situation would be the wrong way to go.
A recent report on the situation from behind Fightful’s paywall indicated that at least one WWE superstar feels the same way. Sean Sapp reported that one talent expressed their disapproval of McMahon appearing on TV. Another took an even more cynical approach and doesn’t think Vince plans to give up any power despite the change at the top.
“One talent said they saw Vince McMahon appearing on screen as a “cheap ratings ploy in the middle of something serious” and don’t expect much of the culture or presentation of WWE to change with McMahon still around and in control of creative. “As long as Vince McMahon still has his creative duties, nothing can change. What could possibly be different? If he asks something of Stephanie as interim CEO, is she going to say no?” one wrestler said.”
Vince McMahon’s upcoming appearance on SmackDown has the wrestling world buzzing. The show is likely to pull a tremendous TV rating. There are those within the company who believe that’s all Vince had in mind all along.
