Stephanie McMahon was named interim CEO of WWE this morning. Her father, Vince McMahon, temporarily stepped down while he is investigated by WWE’s board of directors. Some are skeptical about how much control Stephanie will have.
A report by CNBC noted that a source said that Stephanie McMahon’s promotion was only to send a message that Vince McMahon has no intention of permanently stepping down. That makes sense, as Stephanie was planning a long leave of absence from the company.
Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics appeared on Busted Open Radio to discuss the story today. Thurston echoed the CNBC report’s assertion that Stephanie McMahon’s interim CEO title is all for show. He believes it’s all for public consumption.
“I’m skeptical that much is going to change for Vince day-to-day. I think he’s still going to go to TV, and he’s still going to work in the office at WWE Headquarters.
I know that Stephanie is going to be interim CEO, but I’ve heard from many people that Stephanie and Kevin Dunn, for example, don’t like each other. And as long as someone like Kevin Dunn has a job at WWE, this seems to be for public consumption, looking around at some of the headlines that I see in mainstream media today. I think WWE is getting the response in the headlines that they want.”
Time will tell if Stephanie McMahon and Kevin Dunn ever clash. Many close to the story believe that Stephanie won’t be doing much of anything. There are a lot of people who believe that despite the formal change, Vince McMahon is still running the show.
