CM Punk announced on Friday’s episode of AEW Rampage that he is injured and will have to undergo surgery. Disappointed fans were met with the news that an interim champion will be crowned while Punk heals up. Many have wondered when that surgery will take place.
A report by PW Insider notes that CM Punk’s injury is unlikely to heal correctly without an operation. The exact nature of the injury is unknown. No date has been announced for the surgery.
The timing for Punk’s injury could not have been worse. The Second City Saint just won the world title a week earlier at AEW’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view. A match with Hiroshi Tanahashi for the championship was announced, and those plans also had to be changed.
After Punk’s announcement, Tony Khan introduced a series of matches to determine the new interim champ. There will be a battle royal on Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite. The winner will face Jon Moxley later in the evening and that winner will take on the victor of a match between Hirooki Goto and Tanahashi at NJPW’s Dominion event.
CM Punk said that he originally told Tony Khan he wanted to relinquish the title. Khan told him no, and now Punk will have to defeat the temporary champion when he comes back. Time will tell how long that might take.
AEW was hoping to launch into a new era with a new champion. Instead, Punk’s injury caused everything to change. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the coming weeks.
