MJF and AEW are in a sticky situation right now and it seems that his Double or Nothing match is up in the air. He hasn’t been seen backstage, but his match against Wardlow has been advertised for the pay-per-view, a contest that is literally years in the making.
Sean Sapp of Fightful reported behind his paywall that MJF’s exact contract expiration date is January 1st, 2024. There was some disagreement between MJF and AEW after a contract extension was signed, because he feels as though he has overperformed on the deal.
January 1, 2024 is the date of expiration for the MJF AEW contract, according to sources close to MJF himself. MJF had originally signed with the company in 2019, but signed an extension that significantly increased his salary over the amount he’d signed for. However, since then, MJF has felt like he’s drastically outperformed even that deal and had expressed his frustration with his AEW contract. This led to he and Tony Khan butting heads in early April, leading to much of the drama that has unfolded this weekend.
It was also reported that other AEW talent have found themselves as “not on the same page” with the company in regards to when their contracts expire. This information apparently came from “people close to MJF,” so we will have to see what’s next in this situation.
